Only a few tickets remain for Saturday performances of Balanchine’s Apollo & Other Works
Vancouver’s newest professional ballet company is making an impressive entrance onto the city’s cultural stage — and Vancouver audiences are responding.
Ballet Vancouver’s Friday, September 11 opening-night performance of Balanchine’s Apollo & Other Works is officially sold out, according to the company’s PR Manager.
That leaves ballet fans with only a limited opportunity to catch the company’s inaugural production, with only a few tickets remaining for the September 12 performances at the Vancouver Playhouse.
The triple bill brings together three acclaimed works showcasing the range, athleticism and artistry of professional ballet.
At the centre of the program is George Balanchine’s Apollo, one of the most celebrated works in the neoclassical ballet repertoire and a cornerstone of the international ballet canon.
The production also features the spectacular Black Swan Pas de Deux from Swan Lake, one of the most recognizable and technically demanding moments in classical ballet.
Completing the program is Jorma Elo’s Slice to Sharp, originally created for New York City Ballet’s Diamond Project in 2006. The energetic contemporary work makes its Canadian premiere in Vancouver, pairing rapid, athletic choreography with Baroque melodies.
Vancouver connections on an international stage
Adding to the excitement is the appearance of internationally acclaimed dancers with strong connections to Vancouver.
Principal dancer Heather Ogden of The National Ballet of Canada is a Vancouver-trained artist whose career has taken her from her hometown to one of Canada’s leading ballet companies.
She is joined by Principal dancers Frances Chung and Francesco Gabriele Frola of San Francisco Ballet, bringing an impressive level of international experience to Ballet Vancouver’s inaugural season.
For Vancouver audiences, the production is therefore more than simply the arrival of a new ballet company. It is also an opportunity to see dancers with local roots performing alongside some of the world’s most respected artists.

The opening-night performance is Friday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m., and has now sold out.
