City Opera Vancouver is bringing the community together this fall with two distinctive events that showcase the power of music to connect, heal, and entertain.
Salam-Shalom: A Concert for Healing and Unity
On Saturday, November 29th at 7:30 PM, City Opera presents Salam-Shalom: Echoes of Home at the Fei & Milton Wong Experimental Theatre at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. This moving concert unites Arab and Jewish stories through music, creating a profound space for dialogue and shared humanity.
The evening features two of Canada’s most celebrated sopranos: Jaclyn Grossman and two-time Juno nominee Miriam Khalil. They’ll be accompanied by City Opera’s Artistic Director Gordon Gerrard on piano, with artistic support from Idan Cohen of Ne.Sans Opera & Dance.
The program weaves together Arab and Jewish artistic traditions, languages, and stories, exploring intertwined histories through song. Audience members can expect performances ranging from Viktor Ullmann’s Wendla im Garten to Handel’s Messiah. This concert offers a powerful exploration of resilience and shared human experiences during a time when fostering community connection feels more important than ever.
Opera Pubs Return to Vancouver
For those seeking a more casual opera experience, City Opera has revived its popular Opera Pubs series in partnership with Against the Grain Theatre. These monthly events transform the Fabrique St-George Winery on East 7th Avenue into an intimate performance space where opera meets the relaxed atmosphere of a wine bar.
The first Opera Pub of the season took place on October 7th, with more events planned for November and December. These evenings feature improvised arias and ensembles performed by both established and emerging talent—no tuxedos or formal study required. Just the thrill of live voices in an intimate setting, with conversation and wine flowing freely.
Seating is free on a first-come, first-served basis (arrive before 6:30 PM to secure a spot), with a limited number of paid reservations available for those wanting to guarantee their seats.
Whether you’re drawn to the profound cultural dialogue of Salam-Shalom or the casual vibrancy of Opera Pubs, City Opera Vancouver is creating spaces where music brings people together in meaningful ways.
