Vancouver soccer fans have plenty to cheer about this summer. Canada Soccer has officially confirmed its 26-player roster for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, and no fewer than five Vancouver Whitecaps FC alumni earned their spots: goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, defenders Derek Cornelius, Alphonso Davies, and Richie Laryea, and midfielder Ali Ahmed. With Canada playing two of its three group stage matches right here at BC Place — against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24 — the city of Vancouver will be at the absolute heart of the tournament. For a club and a fanbase that has watched these players grow, this moment feels deeply personal.

Star Power: Davies and Ahmed Lead the Way
Alphonso Davies remains the crown jewel of Canadian football. The 25-year-old left back from Edmonton, currently starring for Bayern Munich, is one of the most recognizable players at the entire World Cup. Davies also carries a special Vancouver connection — he came up through the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy before making his name in Germany. Alongside him in midfield, Ali Ahmed of Norwich City FC brings youthful energy and creativity to Canada’s setup. Ahmed, who grew up in Toronto and joined the ‘Caps before moving to England, represents the next generation of Canadian talent stepping onto the world’s biggest stage.
A Proud Whitecaps Connection
The five confirmed alumni — Crépeau, Cornelius, Davies, Laryea, and Ahmed — mean that a remarkable 23% of Canada’s entire World Cup roster once wore the blue and white. The squad will train at the Whitecaps FC National Soccer Development Centre during their time in Vancouver, giving the city an intimate role in Canada’s World Cup preparations.
I made this goodbye card for young Ahmed, when he went to Norwich City FC in England.

So Close: Priso and Badwal Miss the Final Cut
Two current Whitecaps players came heartbreakingly close. Defender Ralph Priso and midfielder Jeevan Badwal both received provisional roster spots and were named eligible as injury replacements up until 24 hours before Canada’s opening match. Priso even traveled to the pre-World Cup training camp in Charlotte and will stay with the squad for upcoming friendlies against Uzbekistan on June 1 in Edmonton and the Republic of Ireland on June 5 in Montréal. Both players showed they belong at this level — and their time is surely coming.

The Whitecaps Go Global This Window
Canada’s World Cup is just one piece of a remarkable international window for the Whitecaps. Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter earned his call-up with the United States, while winger Rayan Elloumi will represent Tunisia. Most intriguingly for German-speaking fans, young winger Bruno Caicedo received his first-ever call-up to the Ecuador senior national team for a pre-tournament friendly against Saudi Arabia on May 30. Ecuador lands in Group E alongside Germany, Côte d’Ivoire, and Curaçao, meaning Caicedo could one day face the country that so many Westcoast German News readers call home. Ecuador and Germany meet in their final group stage match at MetLife Stadium.

Müller Heads to New York — as an Expert
Speaking of German connections: Thomas Müller, who lit up BC Place all season with the Whitecaps, won’t be playing this World Cup — but he won’t be far from the action. Müller joins the Magenta TV expert team for the tournament, with studios set up at the One World Center in New York and in Ismaning near Munich. All major German broadcasters reportedly competed for Müller’s services, and Magenta ultimately won out. Fans can expect his trademark tactical insight and personality to shine through all summer long.

Vancouver Steps Into the Spotlight
Canada’s World Cup is just one piece of a remarkable international window for the Whitecaps. Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter earned his call-up with the United States, while winger Rayan Elloumi will represent Tunisia. Current Designated Player Andrés Cubas headlines for Paraguay in Group D alongside the United States, Australia, and a UEFA playoff winner — Paraguay’s first World Cup appearance since 2010, a qualification Cubas helped secure with his own tireless performances across the campaign. Meanwhile, young winger Bruno Caicedo received his first-ever call-up to the Ecuador senior squad, with Ecuador placed in Group E against Germany, Côte d’Ivoire, and Curaçao.

@WestcoastGermanMedia – sometimes it is so much fun to be a Whitecaps Player – camaraderie is amazing…
