The lavish production invites audiences to join Clara on her magical journey through the Land of Snow, across the Lemonade Sea, to the Kingdom of Sweets. There, she encounters the enchanting Sugar Plum Fairy while her gallant Nutcracker Prince battles the evil Mouse King and his army of mischievous mice. With breathtaking choreography, regal costumes, and Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, this unforgettable adventure celebrates imagination, wonder, and the warmth of holiday tradition.
“Every year we find new ways to bring imagination to life in this beloved holiday tradition,” says Chan Hon Goh, C.M., D. Litt, Executive Producer and General and Artistic Director of Goh Ballet. “This year’s production promises familiar holiday joy with inspired flourishes certain to delight longtime fans and newcomers alike.”
As Vancouver’s only production of The Nutcracker featuring a live orchestra and international guest stars, audiences will experience Tchaikovsky’s masterful score performed by members of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra under Maestro Leslie Dala’s direction. The production brings together more than 250 performers, ranging from age 6 to 77, showcasing Goh Ballet’s commitment to nurturing Canadian dance talent.
The magic begins before the curtain rises with the World of The Nutcracker experience. From the moment guests enter the theatre, they’re welcomed by the magnificent Mother Ginger, holiday songs, and scenic photo booths—all included with ticket purchase.
Young dancers ages 4 to 7 can participate in an interactive pre-show ballet experience, dancing with their favorite characters and enacting iconic moments from the production. Families can capture memories in the Snow Queen’s sleigh or beside hand-painted vignettes, while The Nutcracker Boutique offers exclusive keepsakes, including autographed pointe shoes and sterling silver jewelry created in collaboration with Lao Feng Xiang Jewelry Canada.
Tickets are now on sale for all performances, with the opening night performance on Thursday, December 18 at 7:30 PM. The German Roots of a Timeless Classic – FYI
The Nutcracker’s enchanting story has deep German roots that add rich cultural significance to this beloved ballet. The original tale, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” (Der Nussknacker und der Mausekönig), was written in German by E.T.A. Hoffmann and published in 1816. This dark romantic fantasy captured the imagination of readers across Europe. French writer Alexandre Dumas later adapted Hoffmann’s story, softening it for younger audiences, which then inspired Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa to create the ballet in 1892.
The story’s German heritage is evident throughout the production—from Clara’s family celebrating a traditional German Christmas party to the wooden nutcracker dolls that originated as folk art in Germany’s Erzgebirge region. These carved figures, often depicting soldiers and kings, were believed to bring good luck and protection to households, making them cherished Christmas gifts that perfectly embodied the magic and wonder of the holiday season.
