A Historic Sunday at BC Place — March 15, 2026
Even before a single ball was kicked, Sunday’s match against Minnesota United FC had already earned a nickname among the faithful: The Cherry Blossom Match. Vancouver’s iconic pink blooms were in full splendour around the city, and the Whitecaps community leaned into the season with open arms — quite literally. Strolling through the crowds outside BC Place, one particularly well-dressed fan caught every eye: a dog proudly wearing a Whitecaps scarf, while his owner beside him sported a cherry blossom scarf sold specially for the occasion.

But this was no ordinary cherry blossom enthusiast. The man behind the scarf introduced himself as one of the organizers of the Cherry Blossom Festival, taking place right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. With a warm smile and the infectious energy of someone who clearly loves this city deeply, he extended an open invitation to everyone around him — come find me after the game, he said, and come celebrate the blossoms too.
It was the kind of only-in-Vancouver moment that perfectly captures why matchday here is about so much more than football. A festival organizer, a scarfed dog, cherry blossoms in the air, and six goals on the way. What a city. What a day.

Westcoast German Media Hits the Streets
For the first time in our history covering this club, Westcoast German Media stepped outside the walls of BC Place to experience matchday the way the most passionate supporters do — from the very beginning.
We sought out the Coastal Guardians, the spirited Whitecaps fan club whose energy and dedication set the tone long before kickoff, and joined them as they gathered with the Southsiders and the Rain City Brigade for the march to the stadium.

What followed was something truly special. Together, this united wave of blue and white took to Robson Street — not the sidewalk, but the middle of the road. Cars stopped. Buses halted. Taxis and Ubers pulled aside. For a few glorious minutes, Robson Street belonged entirely to the Whitecaps faithful, a river of scarves and chants flowing toward BC Place under a sky dotted with cherry blossoms.

It was loud, it was proud, and it was a reminder of why this club and this city are something special. We will never cover a matchday the same way again.
Two European Stars to Watch
The pre-match buzz wasn’t only about cherry blossoms and marches. There was genuine excitement in the stadium about two high-profile European names on the visiting Minnesota United roster.
Julian Gressel, the German winger with a decorated MLS career, was listed among the substitutes — a player whose technical quality and experience always make him a threat. And then there was the name on everyone’s lips: James Rodríguez, the Colombian maestro and 2014 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner, who was also on the bench waiting to make his mark.

The prospect of seeing Rodríguez weave his magic at BC Place added an extra layer of anticipation. Little did anyone know that the history being made today would have very little to do with the visitors.
No Müller? No Problem.
When the starting lineups dropped, there was one notable absence on the Whitecaps side: Thomas Müller, the German legend and 2010 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner, was not in the starting eleven.

For a moment, some fans raised an eyebrow. Müller’s presence alone changes a match.

But this Whitecaps squad has depth, hunger, and belief in abundance — and they wasted no time proving it.
A First Half for the Ages
Within eight minutes, Sebastian Berhalter stepped up to the penalty spot after Jeevan Badwal was brought down in the area, and sent the keeper the wrong way. 1–0.

Five minutes later, Berhalter threaded a perfect ball down the right for Emmanuel Sabbi, who cut it back for Brian White to finish with a clinical first touch. 2–0.

In the 22nd minute, a whipped Berhalter free-kick found Mathías Laborda, who redirected it into the net. 3–0.

And just before halftime, Berhalter picked out Sabbi in the channel, who drilled home his first goal of the season. 4–0 at the break.

This was only the second time in club history that the Whitecaps had scored four goals in the first half of an MLS match. The crowd was electric.
History Made: Brian White’s 100th Goal Contribution
The second half brought more of the same — relentless, purposeful Whitecaps football. In the 52nd minute, AZ drew a penalty, and this time it was Brian White who stepped up. He dispatched it coolly and, in doing so, became the first player in the Whitecaps MLS era to reach 100 goal contributions — 84 goals and 16 assists in Whitecaps colours.

The stadium rose to its feet. It was a milestone years in the making, and it came on a day that already felt historic.

Müller Arrives, Sabaly Finishes
In the 77th minute, Thomas Müller finally appeared — coming off the bench to a roar from the crowd. The legend was on the pitch. And history was quietly being made: this was the first match in MLS history to feature two FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winners, with Müller (2010) and Rodríguez (2014) — who had entered for Minnesota in the 64th minute — both on the field.

Meanwhile, Cheikh Sabaly was writing his own piece of history. Cutting inside from the right and firing home a Mathías Laborda cross despite a desperate goal-line effort from Morris Duggan, Sabaly scored his first ever goal for Whitecaps FC and his first in MLS. 6–0.

Takaoka Keeps It Clean
At the other end, Yohei Takaoka was as reliable as ever. A double save in the 58th minute — denying Kelvin Yeboah and Jefferson Diaz from close range — and a full-stretch stop in the 87th minute ensured the clean sheet remained. It was the Whitecaps’ fifth clean sheet in seven matches across all competitions this season, a continuation of the remarkable 2025 season in which Takaoka led MLS with 13 clean sheets.

A Perfect Start Continues
Vancouver Whitecaps FC 6 – Minnesota United FC 0.
Four wins, no losses, no draws. The Whitecaps have now equalled their best-ever start to an MLS season — the same record they set just last year. Not a single goal conceded at home in MLS play. And 23,885 fans inside BC Place to witness every moment of it.

For Westcoast German Media, this was a matchday unlike any other. We marched down Robson Street with the supporters, we felt the cherry blossom spirit in the air, and we watched this extraordinary team put six past a hapless Minnesota side without their biggest star even starting.

The ‘Caps head next to Spokane for the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 against Seattle Sounders FC. Then, on Saturday, March 21, they return to BC Place to host the San Jose Earthquakes.
The blue and white train rolls on. 🌸⚽
