VANCOUVER, BC — Thomas Müller will take the pitch at BC Place on Sunday afternoon with lederhosen-clad fans filling the stands around him, bratwurst smoke wafting through Terry Fox Plaza, and oompah music echoing across the concourse. For the German legend, it might be the most familiar match day atmosphere he has experienced since crossing the Atlantic.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC hosts San Jose Earthquakes at 3 p.m. PT on October 5 in what the club bills as one of Vancouver’s largest Oktoberfest sporting events. The timing proves fortuitous for Müller, who joined the Major League Soccer side earlier this season and now finds himself immersed in a celebration of his homeland’s most famous festival—7,000 kilometers from Munich.
“Wear your lederhosen,” the Whitecaps urged fans in promotional materials for the match, one of the final two regular season home games at BC Place. More than 22,500 tickets have already been sold, continuing a streak of three consecutive weekend sellouts for the club.
The pre-game festivities begin at noon on Terry Fox Plaza, where Harvest Haus will host an all-ages celebration featuring the Oktoberators, a local band specializing in traditional German brass music. Beer will be available starting at $5, alongside pretzels and bratwurst. The club has capped attendance at the plaza due to space limitations and advises fans to arrive early.

For Müller, the match represents an opportunity to add another chapter to an already storied career. Fresh off helping the Whitecaps secure a record eighth Cascadia Cup and advance to the Canadian Championship final—where they will face Vancouver FC on October 1—the 35-year-old forward sits on the cusp of history. Should he lift the Voyageurs Cup on Wednesday, he would claim his 35th professional trophy, breaking a tie with Toni Kroos to become the most decorated German footballer of all time.

The convergence of Oktoberfest celebration and championship pursuit has created unusual synergy for the Whitecaps, who are seeking their fourth consecutive Canadian title while navigating a playoff push in MLS.
The Whitecaps complete their regular season home schedule on October 18 against FC Dallas, another match for which more than 22,500 tickets have been sold. Limited availability remains for both fixtures.
