Urgent Support Needed to Save BC’s Only German Language Teaching Conference
The British Columbia Council of Teachers of German Faces Major Funding Shortfall
Vancouver, BC – Thursday, July 10, 2025 – The British Columbia Council of Teachers of German (BCCTG) is at risk of cancelling its 2025 Annual Conference, the only professional development event for German language educators in British Columbia.
Due to a recent shift in international funding priorities, key financial support from organizations such as Netzwerk Deutsch—which traditionally helped underwrite the conference—has been withdrawn. Without alternative funding, the BCCTG will be unable to cover the basic costs required to host the event for the first time in its history.
This conference plays a critical role in supporting the shrinking number of German teachers in the province. It provides practical workshops, cultural insights, peer collaboration, and educational resources. It is often the only opportunity for these educators to gather, share ideas, and stay connected with the broader German-speaking community in Canada and abroad.
BCCTG is now calling on community members, former participants, cultural organizations, and anyone who believes in the value of multilingual education to consider making a donation. Funds will help cover:
- Hosting costs for the 2025 conference (in-person or virtual)
- Materials and workshop tools for educators
- Subsidized registration fees to ensure accessibility for all teachers

Founded in 1997, the British Columbia Council of Teachers of German is a non-profit provincial association representing educators teaching German across all levels—from primary to post-secondary and adult education. It was established alongside the Canadian Association of Teachers of German (CATG) and similar organizations across Canada.
The BCCTG is governed by a volunteer board and relies entirely on annual funding approval from the German government. Its work has been guided by key figures such as founding member Isolde Hey, and continues to serve as a cornerstone for German language advocacy in British Columbia.
Help BCCTG continue its mission—one workshop at a time.
Every donation makes a lasting impact.
