Two stoppage-time strikes complete a stunning comeback as the Whitecaps silence the Timbers at B.C. Place
Football, as Thomas Müller has said a thousand times, is a game of moments — and on Friday evening at a roaring B.C. Place, Vancouver’s Whitecaps delivered two of the most thrilling of the young MLS season. Trailing 2–1 with the final whistle all but audible, the hosts scored twice in stoppage time to complete a 3–2 comeback victory over regional rivals Portland Timbers, sending 25,465 fans into raptures (except those ticket holders who came to support the Timbers) and extending their formidable record to five wins from six outings.

The Cascadia Clash: A Tale of Two Halves
The Whitecaps couldn’t have dreamed of a better start. Only six minutes in, a massive kick from goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka flew across the field, catching the Portland defense off guard. Colombian winger Edier Ocampo showed incredible hustle, beating the Portland goalie to the ball and calmly sliding it into the open net. It was a goal fueled by pure energy, marking Ocampo’s first of the season!
For most of the first half, Vancouver looked like the better team, but their rivals from Portland refused to back down. In the 37th minute, Portland’s Juan Mosquera tied the game with a spectacular “rocket” of a shot right off a corner kick. Then, just seconds before halftime, the momentum shifted painfully. Mosquera set up teammate David Da Costa, who sneaked a shot into the corner of the net. Suddenly, the Whitecaps found themselves trailing 2–1 as they headed to the locker room.
“There was no need to panic. Just keep believing — we needed one moment to equalize, and then to push. And today we managed.” — Coach Jesper Sorensen
Müller Magic Saves the Day
Vancouver spent the entire second half hunting for a goal, but time was running out. Finally, in the 89th minute, the breakthrough came: a corner kick from Sebastian Berhalter hit a Portland player’s arm in the penalty area. The referee blew his whistle and pointed to the “spot,” giving Vancouver a high-pressure penalty kick.
Up stepped Thomas Müller. The German World Cup hero and Whitecaps superstar didn’t blink. He used his signature “stutter-step” run to trick the goalie, then calmly tucked the ball into the corner with his left foot. The stadium erupted! It was a legendary finish to bring the game to a 2–2 draw.

The Ultimate Comeback
The Whitecaps weren’t finished yet. Just four minutes later, while Portland was still shell-shocked from Müller’s goal, Sebastian Berhalter proved why he’s one of the best players in the league right now. In the very last seconds of the game, he found the back of the net for the winning goal! The stadium didn’t just cheer—it exploded. This was Berhalter’s fourth goal of the year, continuing an incredible season where he seems to be involved in every big play.
More Than Just a Game
Friday’s match was about more than just the scoreboard. A massive crowd of 25,465 fans—the biggest of the season—packed into B.C. Place for the club’s fifth annual Vaisakhi Match. The entire area around the stadium felt like a giant festival, filled with the music, colors, and spirit of South Asian culture. It was a beautiful reminder of how soccer brings the whole community together.

A Festival of Rhythms
The party started early outside on the plaza with DJ Unusual setting the mood. Once inside, the UBC Bhangra Club and NAAM Bhangra turned up the heat with dance performances that got everyone’s heart racing. Even at halftime, the energy didn’t dip; Surrey’s own Chani Nattan and Inderpal Moga (both JUNO Award nominees!) filled the stadium with a spectacular show of color and pride. By the time Berhalter scored his winning goal, the crowd was already soaring. It was a night where the passion for soccer and the joy of Vaisakhi shared the stage perfectly.
A Taste of Home
Tied into this celebration was a sight that would make any Westcoast German News reader smile. Erdinger Weissbräu, the famous Bavarian wheat beer, was a huge part of the night. A massive Erdinger balloon greeted fans out on the plaza, and the familiar branding lined the stadium walkways. It was a little slice of Germany right in the heart of Vancouver’s biggest soccer party!

A Global Toast
On the second floor of B.C. Place, some fans grabbed a cold Erdinger to watch the drama unfold on the field below. It was the perfect metaphor for the night: Punjabi bhangra, West Coast soccer, and Bavarian brewing traditions all sharing the same space. Each culture was uniquely itself, yet felt completely at home together. In a city as diverse as Vancouver, Erdinger’s presence was a gentle reminder that soccer—at its best—doesn’t just bring us together; it celebrates the different flavors we all bring to the table.
