VANCOUVER, BC – The Vancouver Whitecaps have locked up one of their most important players, announcing on Tuesday that Paraguayan midfielder Andrés Cubas has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club through the 2028 season.
Who Is Andrés Cubas?
Cubas, 29, first arrived in Vancouver back in April 2022 after being brought over from French club Nîmes Olympique. Since then, he has built a reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in all of Major League Soccer. Think of him as the player who wins the ball back, breaks up opposing attacks, and sets the tone for everything the team does. He is not always the flashiest name on the field, but coaches and teammates will tell you he is one of the most important.
What He Has Accomplished
In his time with the Whitecaps, Cubas has played in 136 games and started 127 of them — a number that speaks for itself. Last season alone, he won 44 tackles in league play, leading the entire team for the third year in a row. He also helped the club reach the final of the Concacaf Champions Cup and the MLS Cup, while winning a fourth straight Canadian Championship title. On the international side, Cubas started 13 of Paraguay’s 18 World Cup qualifying matches, helping his country reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years.
What the Club and Player Are Saying
Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster praised Cubas as a leader both on and off the field, calling him “relentless” and crediting him with setting the standard for the club’s younger players. Cubas himself expressed genuine excitement about staying, thanking his teammates, coaches, and the club for the trust they have shown him since day one.
What This Means Going Forward
For the Whitecaps and their supporters, this signing sends a clear message: the club is building something serious, and they want their best players to be part of it. Cubas is not just staying — he is helping lay the foundation for what comes next in Vancouver.
