The German Canadian Benevolent Society of British Columbia is proud to mark its 60th anniversary this year, celebrating six decades of compassionate care and community service. To honour this incredible milestone, the Society is hosting an Oktoberfest-themed celebration on September 25, 2025, at the scenic Vancouver Rowing Club, located at 450 Stanley Park Drive. Guests will enjoy authentic German food, drinks, and live music, all in the spirit of gemütlichkeit. Tickets will be available two months prior to the event, with updates provided via the Society’s website and social media platforms.
Founded in 1965, the Society has long served as a pillar of the German-Canadian community, most notably through the German-Canadian Care Home. Today, it embarks on its most ambitious chapter yet: the redevelopment of a brand-new, state-of-the-art care facility on its current site in Vancouver.
The upcoming facility will house 178 residents, increasing its current capacity by 46 and introducing a modern design that prioritizes comfort, dignity, and independence. The home will be divided into 15 households, each accommodating 12 residents with private rooms and ensuite bathrooms. Each household will feature a kitchen, dining area, lounge, and laundry space, helping residents maintain daily routines in a homelike setting.
Shared neighborhood areas will encourage social interaction, and the new “village space” will offer a community hall, spa, rehabilitation room, art studio, and more. A key feature of the redevelopment is the inclusion of rehabilitation services in line with the Society’s unique Comfortzeit® care model, promoting long-term well-being.
While construction begins in early 2026, staff are already working with families to ensure smooth and respectful temporary relocations. The project, funded in part by Vancouver Coastal Health and supported by the Ministry of Health, is set for completion in 2029.
As part of their ongoing cultural programming, the Society will also host a “Sommerfest” – a special musical event, Journeys of Operas and Operettas, on Saturday, July 19 at 2 PM, featuring Soprano Tamar Simon, Baritone Geoffrey Schellenberg, and Pianist Roger Parton.
With a strong legacy and a bright future, the German-Canadian Benevolent Society of BC remains committed to providing exceptional care, honoring tradition, and building community. For event inquiries, contact Maj-Britt Rosier at society@gcch.ca or call 604-713-6562.
